Avery you can leave whenever you want but international air travel is limited and expensive at the moment, and there aren't many other options here. Currently anyone coming in has to quarantine in a hotel for two weeks at their own expense, but that is set to change soon when we open back up.
It's a little bit different where I am (in the west) because we are completely covid free, so the hard border will remain until early next year when we get our vaccination rates up. Life here is basically just like it was in 2018... everything is open, we can go to clubs, pubs, music festivals, no one wears masks. It's just normal for us, nothing has changed.
It's funny because I keep seeing all these crazy right wing American media reports about how Australia needs to be liberated from such tyranny! Quote Candace Owens:
