I am also aware that religion, very often, has unduly served to perpetuate situations of abuse, but apart from the spiritual, it has also served to establish a code of coexistence at a time when it would otherwise be very difficult.
For example, you can try to convince people that killing is morally wrong, and some will listen to you, but if in a primitive society you say "God tells you not to kill" it is much more effective.
