Hannah The copy they made at the key shop did not work
The copy they made probably had a different type of zig zag pattern. If you look at a housekey, you could see there are dents from the tip to the handle, and if you look in a keyhole, you can see that zig zag (square wave pattern). Notice the keyholes are a perfectly straight line, there are some indentations to prevent a large tool, like a knife or screwdriver to enter the keyhole. The problem with house keys/copies for keys, is that they may not have that same zigzag pattern.
If you do get a copy, ask if you can just get the top half of the key, where the teeth usually sit. You need those teeth to push the pins in the same way your key does, so you can turn and open your lock. (Compare your belt key with your house key for confirmation, that's my guess why the copy didn't work)
