Ines French medical lexicon from 1894: π
Uterine madness - a kind of melancholic delirium that arises from the disordered desire for intercourse with which daughters, widows and married women are sometimes afflicted, and which deprives them of the use of reason to such an extent that they know no measure in their words and actions, inviting men by means of all kinds obscene gestures or expressions to enjoy their favors, which their madness makes impossible to refuse. This condition is also called nymphomania, some people also call it hysteria.
Treatment: Several authors recommend clitoridectomy; we can only protest against this barbaric method, which produces poor results. Exercising until tired, eating sparingly, avoiding lewd reading, obscene images and spectacles. The patient's mind can also be inclined towards religious ideals. Avoiding too much bed rest. Use of the chastity belt. Refreshing drinks. Hydrotherapy. Cosmetic liquid for intimate organs with a weak solution of cocaine hydrochloride.
