Andrew I'm hindu (not willing to delve into more Sorry.) I'm originally from Assam, although I haven't lived there for a long time.
My situation isn't common in India / or in my state. It's mainly my parents who make/want me to wear my belt.
I haven't seen much from Asian communities either, but most families see it as a taboo to speak about all this. Some couples here do practice chastity but that's as a fetish thing. I've spoken to one of them and they wear (both of them) for at most a week.
