Like many things, it is all personal choice that the church issues guidance on. I can find similar edicts against caffeine, but the compound was not understood at the time OG Joseph Smith was alive, thereby making the quotations less amusing to me. And unlike you Europeans, we weren't importing those commodities in that time. (Random: the yaupon holly is the only native North American plant that produces caffeine, and I am not drinking anything that has a Latin name of Ilex vomitoria.) It is one of those things that if you did it openly, the community would question the reason you are doing it.
My family does brew herbal tea when we are ill. I prefer mine with a lot of ginger when that is the case.
I know the English find our method of brewing inside little paper satchets to be abhorrent. How do you continentals feel about it?
