Jen Maybe sexual purity is not so much an ideal for males as it is for females, but parents have been trying to curb boys' masturbation since times when scientists and physicians (which were usually male, of course) still considered female sexual pleasure a myth. Of course one of the most famous anti-masturbation activists, John Harvey Kellogg (widely known for corn flakes), denounced both male and female masturbation equally. If you google stuff like anti-masturbation device, you get tons of victorian chastity devices for both sexes, but the majority of them are to keep penises at bay.
Generally, I would say that traditional female chastity was more about avoiding intercourse with another person, which is rarely ever a concern with male chastity - keeping a penis restrained is pretty much always about masturbation.
As far as modern devices go, I guess it is pretty much a given that most male devices are worn for fetish reasons, and that most devices sold for fetish reasons are worn by men, but that is mostly because the vast majority of devices in general are sex toys and the vast majority are also designed for penises. So yeah, when you break it down to belts used for purity purposes only, things might even out a bit compared to the massively disproportionate distribution of male versus female fetish wearers, but honestly, I still believe males would come out on top, if only for the reason that you can make a reasonably effective male chastity device without a lot of custom fitting effort.
For the same reason, I also believe that among fetish wearers, male users are probably more likely to use it as a lifestyle item, rather than just a short-term toy. Wearing a full belt is difficult and few people achieve 24/7 wear, cages tend to be easier to get used to living in with minimal unlocks. Plus us males tend to be competitive animals who constantly want to trump one another, so if one guy says he is doing one month, it will inspire another to go three, and the third one will glue his lock shut.
I still believe that not all the wearers that pop in here are genuine about their experiences either, that many of them are trying to live out a fantasy; they might have real chastity experience, but more as a fetish than anything, and they re-contextualize their experience with a fantasy of integrating it into family life. But I would not say the male or female experiences are more likely than the other to be thusly embellished. Maybe there are even female fantasies written by a male wearer (which I find a lot more likely than the opposite).
