I feel like with this little cage thing in the crotch area, it is sort of meant to suggest the look of a primitive chastity belt, as someone who had heard of the idea but not of the technology to make it suitable for long-term wear would imagine it. Probably someone who was exposed to the concept via that Robin Hood movie or Mad Max or something along those lines.
