Jonas German Keuschheitsgürtel does specify gürtel, belt, within it, but not sure about usage

Most likely, in all European languages, the "chastity belt" will contain the word "belt", because it is a linguistic calque from medieval Latin, in which theological treatises were written. They contain the term "cingulum castitatis" (literally a chastity belt) which is a theological metaphor for the fight against carnal desire. This concept is much older than the device currently referred to by the same name.

In German, the term "Keuschheitsgürtel für männer" (chastity belt for men) certainly includes cages as well. I don't know if there is a word for "chastity device".

Best definition in my mind is a device worn around the waist to prevent sexual stimulation. Chastity device would more broadly describe any device designed for the purpose.

Andrew (Probably due to computer translated AliExpress offerings), the term „Keuschheitskäfig“ (Käfig = cage) has been established for male devices. If this word carries any heritage? I doubt it.

But since you can plug-and-play German words like Legos, you can easily build a more generic term e.g. „Keuscheitsvorrichtung“, „Keuschheitsgerät“ or „Keuschheitsinstrument“. Though, I have never seem them used …

        So...

        Chastity belt:
A device that enforces sexual abstinence.

Of if we want to be specific:

A beltlike device that enforces sexual abstinence.

It seems to be a modern language construction, although I will admit that in a certain 19th century book I came across the term "cage" for a device to prevent masturbation.

To be honest I thought the "sexual abstinence" idea would be more controversial than the belt/device idea. To some abstinence is refraining from intercourse, to others the idea includes all other forms of sexual interaction and masturbation.

Personally I think Sasha's "prevent sexual stimulation" covers all these bases, but it does suggest a chastity belt is designed to achieve 100% chastity ...whereas that's not always the case. Many (even on this forum) permit masturbation but block intercourse.

A device to enforce sexual abstinence.

(Leaves the thorny issue of what exactly we mean by abstinence out of the definition of chastity belt).

Jonas but think chastity-belt must include, well, a belt. Too literal of me?

the question is rather if you really have to call it a belt? we could just call it a chastity device. it looks more like underpants than a belt anyway.

Jonas To be honest I thought the "sexual abstinence" idea would be more controversial than the belt/device idea.

yes, i see it as a difference if i say abstinence or chastity, yet i accept other opinions and don't have to argue about such small things as long as everyone understands what is meant.

Jonas Personally I think Sasha's "prevent sexual stimulation" covers all these bases

frankly, i see the bigger flaw here in the definition, because a belt doesn't prevent all stimulation, that's what thighbands etc. are for.

            Yeah it's very good.

I see what you mean. I think the belt is given priority as it's the bit that actually prevents removal? Certainly I find myself trying to push the belt down over my hips multiple times throughout the day. It won't budge ofc, but I try anyway!

Ah, yes, you're right. I agree.

a belt does not normally go through the crotch area, so i always find the word "belt" a little difficult. if i were to define it, it would be called chastity pants. 😉

A chastity belt has two functions...to block sex/masturbation and to prevent removal. The chastity is achieved by the pants/crotch shield whereas the security is primarily achieved by a tightly locking belt. It's a major component I think.
