WriterAlexis The reason behind that is the same reason you have so many people from (arguably) German-speaking parts of Europe speak some semblance of English here. English has somewhat become the global lingua franca in so many walks of life that to speak English is to be understood by the world.
Europe has dozens of distinct languages, way more than it would make sense for any person to learn. Since we do not want to have to rely on translation to convert between Castilian, Polish, French, Finnish, Czech or Italian we sorta have to settle on one, that being English. A hundred years ago, the British Empire spanned the world; now, America is the most important partner you can have in commerce, science or politics alike.
Of course, for the people who already grew up speaking English, that is a problem; they never learn the importance of communicating with people who speak a different language. But all attempts to create a lingua franca that is not someone's native language have failed, from revived Latin to Esperanto.
