I think waist or hip might be the key difference here - my daughter's belt is hip and spreading the legs does pretty much nothing to loosen the shield.

                                                                            I guess thighbands can add some extra security, but I can't think of a situation where the benefit of using them would outweigh the downsides. Especially compared to the belt, which is well hidden and doesn't affect anything other than what's necessary. Maybe I got lucky with how well the belt fits my daughter.
