but this sounds less like a problem with the keys and more like problems with the belt in general.

Well I don't have the expensive belts most of you have... I did check with a friend and a mysteel belt is twice as thick as mine. Mine is twice as thick as the very cheap ones...

I have had three times where the metal broke (metal fatigue) in some places that poked me yet I could still not get out. I needed a key. (Not to mention a few loose screws....) So yes, I have had several belt issue emergencies.

Not to mention the one time my back went OUT. Swelling and pain required immediate release. I was downstairs and the only key was on the 2nd floor, and I was alone. Let's just say, I did not plan for that.

So as for me Emergency keys are required. How that works for others....

JonesMacGyver I take it that twice as thick as cheap means BlackEmperor. What exactly was the problem with metal fatigue? Snapped screw/rivet? Because in my experience the typical metal fatigue issue involves the central post in the locking mechanism and the thing just poping open. Funny thing is that the cheap chinese belts with the “high security lock” do not have this part that much overengineered, so this is not an issue.

Snapped in 2 different places in the crotch plate. Twice at one end and once at the other.

Forget the belt quality (which I think is good), what about when my back went out. Totally unpredictable.... (It was a first and hasn't happened again in 3 years)

Just saying emergencies happen.

that's right, and apparently also brand belts that are poorly produced. i hope you find a good belt.

Angelina the point is that you can have an emergency regardless of how good your belt is. You are probably somewhat too young to understand the physical issues of people that are ten to twelve years older than you, and well, while we do sports and random bad ideas, we are crunchy, old and what not.

i understand the point and of course there should be a good emergency system. i just think the best system is of no use if you have problems with the belt.

My key is kept in a key lock box used to hold a key realtors use on for sale homes.
There’s a 4 digit code used to open it.
It just sits on our head board.

She grabs a key to take with her when we go on long trips.

Once we went somewhere and she forgot the key. We were going to make love (she was in the mood) and learned she left the key here.
She got satisfied and slept well. I just slept. Lol

bdsamm As I have heard of several instances where forced opening was necessary, I think it would be great if you share your knowledge in detail how to break some common belts open. Can you illustrate how a good "Vice grips" look, where on the guard they have to be used, where and with what tool a "lock shackle" can be cut? We don't want skin to be hurt with the wrong tools or procedures. Thank You!

Damien in an emergency I kinda assume the lock could be broken like it's small and close - cutting would be a pain but it just doesn't look that strong

i suspect many things from my father's toolbox could break the belt or the lock, in case of emergency you can always call the emergency number

Damien I did not intend to say I kew a way to open any belt but all that I have seen in person could be removed easily with vise grips on the shackle protector or bolt cutters on the lock shackle. The radial lock on the tolly boy belts would be more difficult but still using tools to twist the lock would likely be successful. It is just a pin.
Of course in all cases the belt is severely damaged makig escape evident and requiring major repair or replacement.

I would just try to break through the lock, I think that is the safer way.

Jonas A sufficiently large piece of leather should protect the skin from heat and sparks during some very careful angle grinder work, but yeah, slips could still lead to injury. Or with jaws of life, it might provide some padding from the heavy tools.

Far too great a health risk I think. Belt removal would need to be properly thought out and carried out. Will would have to wait in such a situation.
