Angelina The social classroom dynamics. Both between teaches and students and between different students.

Though personally I am not a fan of such gender segregation, not only because of Angelina's argument that most of life is not segregated, but also because of how it exposes gender minorities who do not perfectly fit with either group to harm.

Angelina If both are in the same lesson Girls are slower to respond to questions than boys regardless of whether they know for sure or not. So they hold back even though they often know better. This creates an imbalance that does not occur when they are taught separately.
Please keep in mind that we are talking about the development phase. This is different from later in life after you have found your point of view.
I agree it is good for both of them to be together but not all the time.

      James

      Disagree.
What barriers has a girl that decides to study physics?
I put myself as example: I had good marks but I did not like it at all!

Ines What barriers has a girl that decides to study physics?
I put myself as example: I had good marks but I did not like it.

Sure. But how many times at school did and do other girls and boys act toward you in a sexist way; assuming you don’t have the mental skill to handle a task.

I’m going to assume it’s fair to say it’s more than 0 - which is not a problem boys have.

Its a bit like saying what barriers does a girl have walking down a street with the odd streetlight out. It’s a street is it not?

          James

Well... none really. What joke did they mess with me? Yes, but in the same way that we messed with the boys.

What you say about the street is true, but it is not the men's fault, it is the rapists' fault. Unfortunately as long as there are houses, there will be thieves, and as long as there are women there will be a criminal typology that is rape.
There, biology gave us bad cards and we have to accept it. We have to be careful and we can not fall into the discourse of "if we tell girls to be careful we are holding them responsible", I do not know in your country, but in mine you hear it a lot.
It would be the same as saying that when the summer season arrives and a police officer always goes on television to remember security rules to avoid robberies "by telling a homeowner to take precautions, the owner of the house is being held responsible of the robbery."

            Kaja

Nobody messed with me, but I didn't like it and even though I passed, it was hard for me to do it

Ines If she was good at physic in school than it is her decission If she like it or Not. But the Point is was she able to get the Support and Knowledge in school to come to this decission?
The Report is about that. Mixed classes are a disadvantage for girls in these subjects.

              Joh

I had same support, classes and information than boys 🤷🏻‍♀️
But it is boring and its application are not very nice either (for me).

              • Joh replied to this.

Ines That is fine But you can't extrapolate you experiance to a General statement

I had chemistry and found it very interesting. In the next school, the teacher did everything he could to present it in a totally boring way. Although I still found it good, I was very often on the verge of falling asleep.
It depends on each individual's experience, but that doesn't make a general statement about whether girls are less suitable for it.

                  Joh
But it was not only me, but everyone in my high school and in my friends' high school too.
I know of no girl who has been looked at badly or put up barriers. To none.

I can tell you that sometimes the most clumsy students made fun of those of us who got good grades, but with boys and girls (and sometimes worse with studious boys) and they made no distinction, an A in physics was the same than an A in literature 😂😂
Biology is a very hard science branch and we are plenty of girls in it.

I think that this is a topic in which politicians have a lot of interest and manipulate a lot.
A few weeks ago the European Union released a map by countries and women in science careers. For my country it said that we were 38%...
And you know what? that there were small letters under the map... Do you know what it said? That in Spain the career of Medicine and career of Nursing had been discounted.
Why? because if they included them, it turned out that here 54% of those enrolled in science careers are girls...

I do not know why but they are very heavy on that topic, and the truth is that what they say I have not seen.

And yes, I have not seen it all, but neither do they, when they paint that painting, take into account that it is not my painting.

I think they want to make things more complicated than they are.

I have been saying that for years and getting blocked for it. Bad people are out there; you do not protect yourself by pretending they do not exist becaue they should not. And if you do get hurt, not being at fault for it is a minor consolation.

Ines Don't trust any statistics you haven't made yourself 🤣

Sorry I dont get this - what are you saying here? That more women are in science or fewer? If you could share a link to that map it would be very interesting.

                    • Ines replied to this.

hanna_anders That more women are in science or fewer?

More. What happens is that many women in scientific careers are in medicine and nursing, so if you deliberately do not count those two careers, the percentage of girls in science grades drops.

I am googling and I can not find that map, I only find one from Eurostat with the correct numbers for Spain. I am still looking to see if I can find it.

Ines it’s curious that the statistics for women in medicine isn’t counted. I’d find that very odd indeed, and would make me doubt the rest of the statistical map, unless it’s being very specific about what it calls “science”

Ines a quick search on the internet shows that at one university in England 45% of students studying physics were women. This might be unusual, but I doubt it. There were also a lot of female students from outside the UK. I’m not sure what it means (I’m not that bright ) in terms of overall numbers, but I suspect you’re extrapolating your own personal observations to the rest of the world.
