                  Not everyone lives in a country where the subsistence level is guaranteed by the state.

                  So yes in a way it's mutual assured destruction, but if you are not really economically independent, nuking the family that provides you with resources might be one of these cases "yes it's your right, but have you considered all the side effects?" where experienced advisors (lawyers, tax advisors, etc) might suggest skipping exercising your rights.

                                                                I reckon it means "once the marriage has been decided, but before the ceremony has been held". While handing over the keys as part of the ceremony seems romantic, I think it might raise some eyebrows that are better left unraised.
